From February 11 to 13, teachers from different countries met in Merano, Italy, to learn and share ideas about sustainability in tourism. The event took place at the Scuola professionale provinciale alberghiera "Savoy", and the program included many interesting activities, discussions, and workshops.
At the beginning of the meeting, we were welcomed at the school and received a detailed explanation of the program and its goals. We listened to a keynote speech about South Tyrol as a sustainable tourism destination and joined an open discussion. Another speaker, Janine Höllrigl, gave a talk that helped us think more deeply about the idea of sustainable tourism and the challenges it brings. We also worked in groups to reflect on this topic.
Each group presented their assignment called "Taste of Tradition: Connecting Food, Culture, and Nature." These presentations showed how traditional food and sustainability are connected in each country. We also had a guided tour of the school’s kitchens to see how they focus on sustainable cooking.
A hands-on workshop taught us about the circular food economy, showing how food can go from farm to plate with care for the environment. One of the highlights of the meeting was the visit to Schnalshuberhof, a local farm that uses organic and sustainable methods. There, we learned about sustainable agriculture and tourism, and enjoyed a traditional dinner made with local products.
During the meeting, we worked together to create a "Sustainable Tourism Guide", where we shared best practices and useful ideas for teaching sustainability.
